WHAT IS A COOKIE EXCHANGE?

WHAT IS A COOKIE EXCHANGE?

BY ANDIE CUMBER

Since the holidays are all about tradition, what better way to start one amongst your family and friends by hosting a cookie exchange.  A cookie exchange or otherwise known as a cookie swap is when a group of people come together during the holidays and exchange baked goods. Everyone shares their cookie disasters and triumphs and with each year your group collectively builds it's own recipe book.  Afterwards the cookies you bring home can be used as a stocking stuffer, hostess gift, or as a donation to your local food shelter.

The way it works is each person bakes 5-6 dozen cookies.  In return you come home with an assortment of 5-6 dozen cookies.  So lets say you have a group of 9 in your cookie exchange.  If each person bakes 5 dozen or 60 cookies then each person gets to take home 6 or 7 of each cookie.

If you're going to, or hosting a cookie exchange use the checklist I've provided, to make your experience is stress free.

- How many cookies do you have to bring (some recipes serving may give you enough for one batch)
-How many cookies will each person attending receive
-Is it required to pre-package each person's cookie batch
-Does your cookie exchange have a theme (the theme for this cookie required a fruit ingredient)
- Is flour one of the required ingredients
-Are boxed cookies allowed (our cookie exchange requires the cookie to be made from scratch)
-Do we need to bring our own serving dish
-Who will host the cookie exchange (It can rotate homes or the person who creates the exchange can host)
-Should we bring anything else in addition to the cookies (If you don't want to bouncing off the walls from the sugar I recommend each person bring a savory dish)
-You will bring cookies to the cookie exchange and bring cookies home so a large container is needed for transport.  If the cookies are not pre-packaged bring sandwich ziplock bags to keep each cookie type separate

Happy Cookie Exchange!
